ASLA Cultural Center Concept in Glendale, California:
This building includes office, library, banquet hall, amphitheater, gymnasium, classroom, cafeteria, and gallery spaces. In order to reduce interior columns and maximize usable space in the limited footprint, full story-high trusses were introduced on alternating floors. The common areas including the gym and banquet hall spanned the entire 100 feet of the property without interior columns. Elevator and stair cores were used as seismic-resisting elements.
The transparent glass facade allows glimpses of the cultural exhibits and inner spaces to engage and welcome the community to enter, learn and participate. The three-story volume of the entry allows for a large number of visitors to assemble, commune and orient before dispersing to functional areas.
